JOHN “SAM” DERMIGNY ’44
From our Lady of Lourdes parish in 1940, Sam was Honorable Mention All Catholic Football in his senior year. Winner of two football scholarships (Temple University and The University of Miami), Sam was a quarterback when his Miami team beat Holy Cross 13-6 in the Orange Bowl in 1946. Coaching Miami’s freshman team to victory before one of the largest crowds ever to watch a college freshman game, Sam led his Miami squad to victory over the University of Florida. Sam was an assistant to Dave DiFillpo at STM in ’53, and head coach at St. Joe’s Prep for seven years and St. James for ten more. He was assistant coach at Widener University in 1981 when they won the Division 3 Championship. Sam was also named to the prestigious Pennsylvania Hall of Fame in ‘90 and the Delaware County Hall of Fame in ‘95. He is presently assisting at Haverford High School in Havertown, Pa.
BERNIE MC COLLUM ’50
He starred in both football and track at STM but it was in track that St. Rose of Lima’s Bernie McCollum made his mark – and how about a record-setting high jump of 6’2” in 1950 when he won both the Philadelphia Catholic League & State Catholic Track Championships? Bernie, a member of the Catholic League Championship team of 1948-49 also tied for first place in the All City Championships in 1950 with a high jump of 6’0”. He also jumped for the Shanahan Catholic Club during those years winning many individual awards. Today, Bernie is President of the Schwenksville Borough Council. He’s a notary public, a constable and a District Judge. Married to Elizabeth, he has nine children and lives in Schwenksville, Pa.
DR. JAMES GIUDICE ’59
Playing four years of football at STM, Jim Giudice, from St. Callistus parish, was selected to Second-Team All Catholic in his junior and senior years. Jim was an outstanding member of the team that defeated West Catholic in two of three years. Playing “both ways” (offensive guard and linebacker) at Lafayette College, he was selected as First-Team All MAC and Honorable Mention All Little East All American. Today, Jim is a physician, a Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Pulmonary Division at the School of Osteopathic Medicine at the Medical School of New Jersey, Southern Division. Dr. Jim is married to Linda, formerly of Norwood, Pa. They reside in Haddonfield, NJ and have three children, a son, Cris and daughters Ali and Amy.
ALBERT GRENFELL ’71
From the Wynnfield section of Philly and St. Barbara’s parish came Al Grenfell and four of his brothers who played at STM. Al’s game was basketball though he played two years of baseball as well. As team Captain in his senior year, he was selected to Second-Team All Catholic Basketball. He won a scholarship to Bently College in Waltham, Mass. And during his four years there his team compiled a record of 89 –11, going to the Division 2, New England Conference final each year. In all his four years at Bently, Al was selected to the ECAC All Star team. He finished his college career with 1500 points scored and 1000 rebounds! Al spends his free time today as a high school referee in basketball, soccer and lacrosse, and as a coach for a local youth club. He’s married to Betsy Lee, has three children, Jaclyn, Dean and Garrie, and lives in Hatfield, Pa.
