Alumni Association Officers BY BILL PATTON '59 Running without opposition for repeat terms, the current slate of officers for the St. Thomas More Alumni Association was returned to office by acclamation at a meeting held at the Manoa American Legion Post in June 12th. Taking the reigns again as President for a two-year term, starting in September, will be Bill McGillan '58. Charlie Bowes '56 had been filling out the unexpired term of our Vice President, the late Jim Pasquarello '56, and Charlie was elected to fill a full two-year term. About to begin his sixth term as Secretary, Mario Favacchia '60 was returned to his post, along with John Millon '74, Treasurer, and Gerry Woods '66, Assistant Treasurer. Our officers have been intensely dedicated to a vision of the future of the Alumni Association, and their efforts have yielded tangible results. Work has been done to reach inactive members, and to recruit members from the more recent graduating classes of the 1960's and 1970's. The Scholarship Fund, in addition to reaching a record level of over one million dollars in assets, has enjoyed a resurgence of more vigorous investment returns as of late, which has allowed the committee to increase the number of scholarships granted for the 2007-2008 school year to an unprecedented 50 students. By modifying our agreement with the Archdiocese, the Board hopes to use more of the investment returns to fund a higher number of annual awards now while the alumni members are still alive, rather than after we are gone. As always, the assets themselves -the "principal"- will not be touched. Only interest earned, dividends, and capital gains will be appropriated for scholarships. It has been estimated that even if there were no additional deposits made to the principal, and we awarded 55 scholarships of $1000 each annually, the fund would continue to grow, reaching as high as $8 million in 40 years. The officers and the Board of Directors are grateful for the foundation that has been built by the original members, and appreciate all the work that was done in the early years that is now paying the handsome dividends that we reap today. The re-elected slate of officers has also pledged to continue to support popular alumni programs such as the Annual Communion Breakfast, the Memorial Mass, participation in the St. Patrick's Day Parade, the Utopian Golf Classic, and the Golden Bear on the Delaware. They invite your comments, ideas, suggestions, participation - and even your complaints - in the effort to keep the St. Thomas More Alumni Association in the limelight as the most fervent high school alumni association in the Delaware Valley. Board Meetings are open to all members, and are held at 7:00pm on the second Tuesday of each month during the school year in the Faculty Lounge adjacent to the student cafeteria of Cardinal O'Hara High School on Sproul Road in Springfield.
